I found the problem. It looks like I can allow for a blank field with the following change.

Old Code:

favourite_snack = models.CharField(_('favourite snack'),
                                   max_length=5)

New Code:

favourite_snack = models.CharField(_('favourite snack'),
                                   max_length=5, blank=True)
